When my friends and I decided on a path to follow in search of Trachilas, the neck of Kythera ,we never imagined that this would be such a lovely place. So much with enthusiasm we took some photos of our trip. We were positive that you would also see the raw beauty through our camera lens.
It was a sunny day with the occasional cloud passing through .The breeze was perfect and the weather stable.
Eugenia, Elena, Teo,Theodora (Elena’s dog) and myself were about to live the experience of trekking to Trachilas. This is a must see, a destination you shouldn’t miss on your visit to Kythera Island.
The pictures below have captured some of the magic and wilderness of the landscape, combining the camera lens’s black and colour touch ups.
My favourite ? , hard to say, I enjoyed photographing every moment.
Trekking and breathing the clean air was well worth the adventure.

Boarding to Kythera..Nice is the youth who seek thei destination through love.
On the boat of Dreams to Kythera let them board. Love will exist all around them, it will lead them to Happiness. It only exists the
re, near the sea-front; the first piece of life, in youth‘s small journey.
May all the young and all the healthy board that boat of Love, towards Kythera; float in the dreams and enjoy it. May they find their way to Love, Kythera’s love.

Believe it or not, I have thousands of photos of Milopotamos and the waterfalls of Fonisa. When the time came for me to choose which one to post, I just could’t. Then I used the power of music, close my eyes and travelled down Mylopotamo’s traditional square, under that old tree’s branches.
The village is such a lovely place for trecking.The crystal waters, the smell of untouched nature and the legend of Fonisa waterfall keeps my feelings in a vigilance mood. Don’t miss a visit to the old watermill of Filipi which was recently renovated.
Finally,don’t miss the old coffee shop-restaurant of Kalliopi,called Platanos,which is the only way to indulge greek traditional food and greek coffee. Have a nice trip.

Should I travel?
To travel I just need to be: I travel from day to day, from every train station to another or even my own body’s station, or my destiny’s. I walk with my head down along the streets, at squares leaving behind faces and gestures;everything is the same , everything is different..like the scenery here.
If I imagine, I see.
What more can come out of travelling? Only fantacy’s weakness can justify movement as the fullfillment of senses.
“Every venue will lead you to the other side of the world.” But that other side since the time the world got exchausted when we took it on a walk, is the same place you come from.
We make life. Our travels are the travellers. What we see isn’t what it seems;its what we are.

Ανακαλύφθηκε σε ναυάγιο ανοικτά των Αντικυθήρων. Με βάση τη μορφή των ελληνικών επιγραφών που φέρει χρονολογείται μεταξύ του 150 π.Χ. και του 100 π.Χ., αρκετά πριν από την ημερομηνία του ναυαγίου, το οποίο ενδέχεται να συνέβη ανἀμεσα στο 90π.χ. και 60π.χ. Θα μπορούσε να ήταν κατασκευασμένο μέχρι μισόν αιώνα πριν το ναυάγιο. Το ναυάγιο ανακαλύφθηκε το 1900 σε βάθος περίπου 40 με 64 μέτρων και πολλοί θησαυροί, αγάλματα και άλλα αντικείμενα, ανασύρθηκαν από Συμιακούς σφουγγαράδες και βρίσκονται σήμερα στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο στην Αθήνα.
Στις 17 Μαίου 1902 ο αρχαιολόγος και διευθυντής του Μουσείου Βαλέριος Στάης πρόσεξε ότι ένα από τα ευρήματα είχε έναν οδοντωτό τροχό ενσωματωμένο και εμφανείς επιγραφές με αστρονομικούς όρους.
Το αρχαίο ναυάγιο επισκέφθηκε ξανά το 1978 ο Ζακ-Υβ Κουστώ με την ομάδα του Καλυψώ. Η αποστολή του αυτή έχει γυριστεί σε ντοκιμαντέρ με τον τίτλο “Diving for Roman Plunder”.
Ο μηχανισμός είναι η αρχαιότερη σωζόμενη διάταξη με γρανάζια. Είναι φτιαγμένος από μπρούντζο σε ένα ξύλινο πλαίσιο και έχει προβληματίσει και συναρπάσει πολλούς ιστορικούς της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας αφότου ανακαλύφθηκε. Η πιο αποδεκτή θεωρία σχετικά με τη λειτουργία του υποστηρίζει ότι ήταν ένας αναλογικός υπολογιστής σχεδιασμένος για να υπολογίζει τις κινήσεις των ουρανίων σωμάτων. Πρόσφατες λειτουργικές ανακατασκευές της συσκευής υποστηρίζουν αυτήν την ανάλυση. Από τις πρόσφατες έρευνες καταρρίφθηκε η θεωρία ότι εμπεριέχει ένα διαφορικό γρανάζι, όμως ο ανακαλυφθείς μηχανισμός της κίνησης της Σελήνης είναι ακόμα πιο εντυπωσιακός, καθότι δίνει τη δυνατότητα μεταβλητής γωνιακής ταχύτητας στον άξονα που κινεί τη Σελήνη (δεύτερος Νόμος Κέπλερ).
Ο καθηγητής Ντέρεκ ντε Σόλλα Πράις (Derek De Solla Price), φυσικός και ιστορικός της επιστήμης που εργαζόταν στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Γουέιλ, δημοσίευσε ένα άρθρο για τον μηχανισμό αυτό στο περιοδικό Scientific American τον Ιούνιο του 1959, όταν ακόμα ο μηχανισμός δεν είχε μελετηθεί πλήρως. Το 1973 ή το 1974 δημοσίευσε τη μονογραφία του με τίτλο “Γρανάζια από τους Έλληνες”, βασισμένη σε σάρωση του μηχανισμού με ακτίνες γ που πραγματοποίησε ο ακτινοφυσικός του Ε.ΚΕ.Φ.Ε. “Δημόκριτος” Χαράλαμπος Καράκαλος. Ο Πράις υποστήριξε ότι η συσκευή αυτή θα μπορούσε να είχε κατασκευαστεί από τη Σχολή του Απολλωνίου στη Ρόδο. Τα συμπεράσματά του δεν έγιναν αποδεκτά από τους ειδικούς της εποχής, οι οποίοι πίστευαν ότι οι Αρχαίοι Έλληνες είχαν το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο αλλά όχι και την απαιτούμενη πρακτική τεχνολογία για μια τέτοια κατασκευή.
Η μελέτη του συνεχίζεται από Άγγλους και Έλληνες ειδικούς των Πανεπιστημίων του Κάρντιφ, των Αθηνών, της Θεσσαλονίκης, του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου και του Μορφωτικού Ιδρύματος Εθνικής Τραπέζης, σε μια διαπανεπιστημιακή ομάδα. Η σύγχρονη έρευνα υποστηρίζεται από την τελευταία τεχνολογία με τη βοήθεια μεγάλων εταιρειών, με πρωτοποριακά προγράμματα ψηφιακής απεικόνισης και έναν ειδικό τομογράφο, ο οποίος κατασκευάστηκε ειδικά για την έρευνα του μηχανισμού των Αντικυθήρων. Τα αποτελέσματα την έρευνας επιβεβαίωσαν ότι ο μηχανισμός φέρει 30 οδοντωτούς τροχούς οι οποίοι περιστρέφονται γύρω από 10 άξονες. Η λειτουργία του μηχανισμού κατέληγε σε τουλάχιστον 5 καντράν, με έναν ή περισσότερους δείκτες για το καθένα. Με τη βοήθεια του τομογράφου έχουν διαβαστεί αρκετές από τις επιγραφές που υπήρχαν στις πλάκες και στους περιστρεφόμενους δίσκους, οι οποίες εμπεριέχουν αστρονομικούς και μηχανικούς όρους, και έχουν χαρακτηριστεί από τους ειδικούς ως ένα είδος “εγχειριδίου χρήσης” του οργάνου.
Ο μηχανισμός αυτός έδινε, κατά την επικρατέστερη σύγχρονη άποψη, τη θέση του ήλιου και της σελήνης καθώς και τις φάσεις της σελήνης. Μπορούσε να εμφανίσει τις εκλείψεις ηλίου και σελήνης βασιζόμενος στον βαβυλωνιακό κύκλο του Σάρου. Τα καντράν του απεικόνιζαν επίσης τουλάχιστον δύο ημερολόγια, ένα ελληνικό βασισμένο στον Μετωνικό κύκλο και ένα αιγυπτιακό, που ήταν και το κοινό “επιστημονικό” ημερολόγιο της ελληνιστικής εποχής.

Τα Κύθηρα περιήλθαν στη βενετική κυριαρχία το 1207,μετά την Δ’ σταυροφορία και παρέμειναν στην κυριαρχία των Βενετών vw to 1797 (με μία διακοπή από το 1715 ως το 1718,κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας τέθηκαν υπό οθωμανική κατοχή).
Λόγω της σημαντικής θέσης των Κυθήρων,μεταξύ Κρήτης,Πελοποννήσου και Ιόνιων Νήσων,αποτέλεσαν φυσιολογική προέκταση των βενετικών κτήσεων και απαραίτητο συμπλήρωμα τους προς το νότιο μέρος του Ιονίου.Μετά την αιματηρή επιδρομή του Βαρβαρόσσα στο νησί,το 1537,μεταφέρεται η πρωτεύουσα από τον οικισμό Άγιος Δημήτριος(Παλαιόχωρα) στο Καψάλι.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του τουρκοβενετικού πολέμου (1645-1669) και των Ελληνικών επαναστάσεων παρατηρείται μεταναστευτική κίνηση από την Κρήτη προς τα Κύθηρα.
Από το 1669 ως το 1715 με τη συνθήκη Passarovitz το νησί υπάγεται διοικητικά στη βενετική διοιίκηση της Πελοποννήσου
1715-1718. Την τριετία αυτή τα Κύθηρα τίθονται υπό οθωμανική κατοχή και με το τέλος της επανέρχεται στη βενετική διοίκηση,χάνοντας όμως τη στρατηγική τους θέση.
1797-1798/1807-1809. Τα διαστήματα αυτά τα Κύθηρα γνωρίζουν την Γαλλική κυριαρχία ενώ για ένα χρόνο,1799-1800,παρέμειναν υπό ρωσοτουρκική κατοχή.
1800-1807. Την επταετία αυτή τα Κύθηρα εντάσσονται στο πολιτικό και διοικητικό πλαίσιο της Επτανήσου Πολιτείας.
1809-1864. Τα Κύθηρα περιέρχονται στη Βρετανική προστασία.Το 1864 τα Κύθηρα περιήλθαν στην αγκαλιά της Ελλάδας.
Ενεργός είναι επίσης η επαναστατική δραστηριότητα του νησιού κατά τη διάρκεια της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης και του Ριζοσπαστικού Αγώνα των Επτανήσιων για την ένωση με τον κορμό του απελευθερωμένου τμήματος της κεντρικής και νησιωτικής Ελλάδος.
Το αρχειακό υλικό του κάστρου των Κυθήρων είναι από τα μεγαλύτερα στην Ελλάδα,αφού απαριθμεί περί τις πέντε εκατομμύρια σελίδες. Την ύπαρξή του,το αρχειακό υλικό,οφείλει στον Θεμιστοκλή Πετρόχειλο,ο οποίος κατα τη διάρκεια της γερμανικής κατοχής,φρόντισε να μεταφέρει το υλικό σε ασφαλή σημείο.
