Agia Pelagia is the largest and most populated seaside village in the northern part of Kythera.
In 1538 pirate Barbarosa of the Turkey sea force, sent in his army to conquer Kythera. The invasion took place at the Agia Pelagia gorge, “Kakia Lagada”, where Paliochora’s gorge ends.
It is said that 7000 souls were lost. Whoever got the chance to escape the pirate’s rage, found refuge deep in the mountains and its caves.
That’s where I found myself walking..at the Agia Pelagia gorge, “Kakia Lagada”…and nature made sure I relived the attack..
Wind was blowing stongly, the sea was forced into the gorge, crashing on the mountains…held captive.
There where through the rocks, life beamed.
Where pain was carved…is still carved.
